How Much Pasture Per Horse?
Pasture requirements depend on climate, soil quality, rainfall, and management. In lush climates with good management, 1.5–2 acres per horse is sufficient. In dry regions, 5–10 acres may be needed.
Rotational grazing (dividing pasture into paddocks and rotating horses through them) significantly improves grass recovery and can support 25–50% more horses per acre than continuous grazing.
Minimum pasture acreage: 1–2 acres per horse for combined grazing and exercise, assuming adequate grass coverage and rotational management. 1 acre per horse supports approximately 1,000–1,500 lbs of dry matter forage per season in a moderate climate (about 60–80 days of grazing at 2% body weight per day for a 1,200 lb horse). Poor soils, drought, or year-round grazing pressure require more acreage.
Rotational grazing: dividing pasture into 3–5 paddocks and rotating horses every 5–10 days (when grass reaches 6–8 inches before grazing, rested when grazed to 3–4 inches) dramatically increases carrying capacity. Rotational management can support 1.5–2× the number of horses compared to continuous grazing of the same acreage.
Carrying capacity calculation: grass production in your climate (typically 2,000–4,000 lbs DM per acre per year for improved pastures in the Eastern US; 500–1,500 lbs in semi-arid Western ranges). A 2-acre pasture producing 3,000 lbs DM/acre = 6,000 lbs DM total. A 1,200 lb horse at 2% body weight/day needs 24 lbs DM/day = 8,760 lbs/year. One horse needs approximately 1.5 acres for year-round grazing at this production level.
Sacrifice lot: when pasture is stressed (drought, winter dormancy), confine horses to a sacrifice area (non-grass dirt paddock) and supplement with hay. Grazing dormant or recently frozen grass damages root systems and reduces next-season production significantly. A properly managed sacrifice area protects long-term pasture productivity.
