Equine weight estimation: the Carroll-Huntington formula is the industry standard: weight (lbs) = (heartgirth in inches² × body length in inches) / 330. Heartgirth is measured around the barrel just behind the elbows after a normal exhale; body length is from point of shoulder to point of buttock in a straight line. Accuracy is ±5–10% for horses of average build. Weight tapes measure heartgirth only and use breed-averaged tables — faster but less accurate (±15–20%).

Daily feed requirements: horses require 1.5–3% of body weight in dry matter forage per day. A 1,200 lb horse needs 18–36 lbs of hay dry matter (DM) daily. Typical grass hay is 90–93% DM; one flake weighs 4–8 lbs depending on hay type and density. Feeding hay at 2% BW is standard maintenance; horses in hard work, lactating mares, and growing foals need 2.5–3%+ of body weight in DM and often additional concentrate calories.

For horses, monthly body condition scoring (Henneke 1–9 scale) and weight monitoring catch health problems before they become crises. BCS 5 is optimal for most horses; BCS ≥7 significantly increases laminitis risk in predisposed breeds.
